Former Leeds United forward turned pundit Noel Whelan has stated that versatile Everton defender Mason Holgate would be a very good signing for West Bromwich Albion for the upcoming season.
Holgate spent the second half of the previous campaign at the Hawthorns and despite not living up to the expectations which were nested on his shoulders, Whelan is optimistic that he could be a success this time.
While Speaking to the Football Insider, he said: “West Brom are obviously looking to freshen things up and I think Holgate’s a very good signing. You’ve got a player there that’s come from Everton and is a very good football player.”
The Baggies failed to earn promotion to the Premier League following their defeat at the hands of Aston Villa in the play-off semi-final. But they have the resources and the wherewithal to mount another promotion bid.
New manager Slaven Bilic has been busy in the ongoing transfer window, having secured the acquisitions of Kenneth Zohore, Darnell Furlong, Semi Ajayi, and Filip Krovinovic to beef up his arsenal.
However, the absence of a prominent right-back is a cause of concern for Albion. In such a scenario, it will make a lot of sense if Bilic signs Holgate on loan from the ranks of the Toffees this summer.

Holgate operated as a central defender as well as a right-back for the Throstles last season and his versatility is one of his strongest suits. He has enough pace to ghost past opposition players and is an excellent dribbler.
The 22-year-old is a modern-day full-back as he makes a swift transition from defence to attack. He gallops forward regularly and backs himself to move the ball in tight spaces in the final third to deliver crosses into the box.
His controlled aggression is notable as he attends to his defensive duties meticulously and showcases immense work ethic on the pitch. Besides, he is a tough tackler and is comfortable while in possession.
The English prodigy is still in his learning years and there are many areas where he needs to improve. He has to better his aerial skills, needs to pass the ball in a shrewd manner and must also work on his positional awareness.
However, he has the element of age on his side and could become a finished article if he continues to develop in the right direction. To do so, he needs to play regularly and a move to Bilic’s side could help him in his endeavour while also offering the Baggies an exciting option.
