Everton are reportedly looking to sign the Dutch international full-back Denzel Dumfries this summer.
The PSV Eindhoven star has grown in stature in recent years and is now impressing on the international stage with his performances at Euro 2020.
He had another fine season in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals and assisting six times in 30 games. According to the Dutch news outlet Voetbal International (via Sempre Inter), Everton are eyeing a summer swoop for the 25-year old defender.
Everton are in for a big summer after Carlo Ancelotti’s departure. It looked like the Toffees were going in the right direction under the experienced coach but his exit has put the Everton hierarchy in a conundrum.
They started the previous season brightly and looked set for European football. However, their form slumped in the latter half of the season. All they were able to manage was a disappointing mid-table finish.
So it’s clear that they need to strengthen their squad regardless of who they appoint as their manager.
Is Denzel Dumfries the ideal player for Everton?
Denzel Dumfries has been instrumental for the Netherlands national team in the group stage of Euro 2020. In three games, he has scored two goals for his side from the right-wingback spot. He has been great when going forward but has been defensively robust as well. He has won 3.7 aerial duels per game and averages only 0.7 fouls per game.
Seamus Coleman has just another year left in his contract with the club. The 32-year old has been a great servant to the Merseyside club but now is the time that they look for his successor.
Dumfries has the pace and physicality to help him adapt to the Premier League’s style. He is someone who can be trusted to run up and down the flank to create opportunities for his team. He prefers to make late runs into the box, as he has sown at the Euros, and would be a hard player to contain.
At the age of 25, he still has his peak years ahead of him. If he can improve his crossing ability, he might become a great attacking asset keeping in mind the presence of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Everton’s attack.
The Oranje wingback is a diligent worker. No matter which manager comes to Goodison Park, he will love to work with a player who gives his everything on the field.
However, it won’t be an easy road for the Toffees to sign Dumfries. The PSV defender has impressed many other clubs with his eye-catching displays. It has been reported that Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and AC Milan are interested in acquiring his services. If Achraf Hakimi is allowed to leave, Inter will want to sign Dumfries as his replacement. Thus, it is pivotal for Everton to make the first move as quickly as possible.
