Chelsea are looking to sign a left-back in the transfer window this summer, and have been linked with a move for Real Madrid ace Sergio Reguilon.
Spanish news outfit AS claim that Chelsea will compete with Arsenal and Napoli for Reguilon, who could cost around €25million this summer.
With Marcelo and Ferland Mendy ahead of Reguilon in the Real Madrid squad, it seems unlikely that the Spaniard will play regularly under Zinedine Zidane.
But is he the right man for Chelsea?
Sergio Reguilon – Player profile
Reguilon broke into the Real Madrid senior side in the 2018/19 season, and managed two assists in 13 Spanish Primera Liga starts.
The 23-year-old was sent out on loan to Sevilla last season after Madrid decided to spend big on Ferland Mendy. However, Reguilon did not have too much to complain as he made 29 league starts at Sanchez-Pizjuan, announcing himself to European football.
Reguilon managed two goals and four assists from left-back last season, and put in some match-winning performances, which have attracted attention from around Europe.
He has made 45 La Liga appearances so far, and Real Madrid, even if they sell, are sure to insert a buy-back clause in his contract, which shows how highly he is rated in the Spanish capital.
At just 23, he has the potential to turn into one of the best in the world and will be a pretty big coup for Chelsea.
The right player for Chelsea?
An attacking full-back by trait, the Reguilon is an excellent dribbler and is usually calm and composed with the ball at his feet. Though he not the best crosser of the ball, Reguilon is effective in build-up play, thanks to his vision and decision making.
His defensive side of the game still needs improvement, but in a team that can dominate possession of the ball, he is a real asset to have even on the left flank.
Chelsea are still looking at Ben Chilwell as the first choice left-back option for next season. The likes of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are wing-backs more than full-backs, and Reguilon may also fall into a similar category.
The Spaniard can play at left-back and has the know-how and ability to sit back and defend for long periods. But he is at his best when his team is not under pressure and Chelsea need to make sure that Reguilon is given time to get used to the English game.
But, Chelsea need a ready-made left-back, who can walk into the first team, so Chilwell seems to be a better bet for Lampard at this stage.
Reguilon’s price makes him a risk worth taking for the English side. So if Leicester City do not budge over their valuation of Chilwell, Chelsea do have a more than capable alternative lined up.
But do you think Reguilon should be the first choice left-back transfer target for Chelsea this summer?
