Real Madrid are reportedly keen on making a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, who the Spanish giants tracked even the summer transfer window.
The Danish midfielder is set to leave the club as his contract at the North London side will expire at the end of this season.
As per Spanish outlet AS, Madrid want to sign Eriksen as they feel that they cannot sign Manchester United’s Paul Pogba or Ajax’s Donny van de Beek in the January transfer window.
The report says that Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane sees the Danish midfielder as an important player for his team. Madrid have struggled with injuries in the central midfield area this season which has required them to sign a new midfielder.
AS further claim that Zidane wants Pogba, but feels that Manchester United are not willing to sell him, while van de Beek does not want to leave Ajax during the season.
Real Madrid feel that they can buy Eriksen at €30 million in the winter, which is a huge reduction in price from the €80 million that Spurs wanted a few months ago.
Why Eriksen would be a good creative option for Zidane
Zinedine needs to add at least one central midfielder to his team in the January transfer window as several of his midfielders have suffered injuries in the last few weeks, and are not getting any younger.
The French manager has Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Federico Valverde as his options in central midfield, while Isco can also fill in that role.
The decision to play James Rodriguez in central midfielder backfired recently, which could’ve possibly prompted Zidane to intensify his search for a new midfielder.
Eriksen has been one of the most consistent creative midfielders in the Premier League over the last few seasons, and would fit very well in Real Madrid’s style of play.
The Danish midfielder can control the tempo of the game, provide assists to attackers, as well as score goals. The 27-year-old has great positional sense, while he is also versatile enough to play as an attacking midfielder or a central midfielder.
Zidane should make his signing top priority as he could be the solution to Madrid’s midfield woes.
