Steve Bruce managed to fulfil a childhood dream at Tottenham Hotspur stadium as he managed to register his first win as a Newcastle United manager this weekend. Joelinton slotted home the best chance Newcastle United created in the first half, and that goal was enough to see out the game and stun Spurs, who have now tasted their first loss of the season after a lucky draw against Manchester City last weekend.
Lascelles was a tad lucky not to concede a penalty late in the second half but Spurs did not test the visitors’ backline enough to take anything from this game.
NEWCASTLE UNITED PLAYER RATINGS
Martin Dubravka (7):
Made a couple of crucial saves that kept his side in the game. Was quick to collect crosses and dominated his box enough to frustrate the Spurs attack.
Emil Krafth (7):
The Swede hardly put a foot wrong all game, as he managed to keep Son quiet and also added numbers to the attack when Newcastle were able to hold on to the ball in the middle of the park.
Fabian Schar (8):
Arguably the best defender in the game, Schar won four tackles, made three crucial blocks and was there to mop up spaces inside his box, giving Spurs’ attackers very little time on the ball.
Jamaal Lascelles (7):
Won his duels with Harry Kane more often than not, and was also quick to clear the ball out of danger, keeping his backline organized for most of the game.
Paul Dummett (8):
With 12 clearances to his name, more than any other player on the night, Dummett took no chances and was crucial in Newcastle maintaining their lead late in the game when Spurs threw everyone forward.
Matt Ritchie (7):
Was full of running all night and was not wasteful with the ball. Created a couple of chances and did his bit to help his side register their first win this season,
Miguel Almiron (8):
His hold up play and work-rate was brilliant and his battle with Danny Rose on the flank was a treat to watch. Got the better of the English full-back at times and was ever-present in the sparse counter attacks The Magpies managed to stitch together late in the game.
Isaac Hayden (7):
Threw himself around in the midfield and restricted the Spurs midfield from operating at their full capacity.
Sean Longstaff (7):
Worked pretty hard to plug gaps at the back for most of the game and came close to scoring a stunning goal in an assured performance by the youngster.
Allan Saint-Maximin (5):
Saint-Maximin was not fully fit at the start of the game and it took just one sprint on the flank for him to aggravate his injury which saw him replaced early in the game.
Joelinton (8):
His industry and skill were too hot to handle for Spurs at times. Took his chances pretty well and helped relieve that pressure on the Newcastle backline late in the game with his aggressive hold-up play.
Subs:
Christian Atsu (7):
Replaced Maximin early in the game and was full of running, keeping young Walker-Peters honest. Set up Joelinton’s winner and was one of the best players for the visitors, creating more chances than any other player in the game.
Federico Fernandez (6):
Replaced Lascelles who picked up a niggle and did well not to disrupt the backline and see off his side to an unexpected win.
