Liverpool‘s Harry Wilson had a fantastic season on loan at Frank Lampard’s Derby County, despite the Rams experiencing defeat in the pivotal Championship play-off final match against Aston Villa.
The Welsh player was an integral part of the Derby team, featuring in 49 matches in the 2018-19 season in all competitions.
Wilson returns to parent club Liverpool with no idea if he will have a future at the Merseyside club.
“It (playing in several positions) is only going to benefit me because now I don’t necessarily play on the wing, I play either side, number 10, central midfield.
“There is a loan guy called Jools [Julian Ward]. I am in touch with him and he reports back to the manager. I have had a few texts off [Jürgen Klopp].
“Hopefully the manager has seen the games on TV and I’ve made a good impression.
“I’ll go back there pre-season. What happens from there I don’t know,” said the 22-year-old in a recent interview with The Guardian.
Prior to his loan spell at Derby, Wilson played in the Championship with Hull City where he scored 7 goals in 14 games. The player has been linked with a move to Leeds United, but it’s unlikely the club will sanction a move for the player considering he won’t come cheap.
Wilson scored 18 goals for Derby County in all competitions, 16 of them coming in the Championship. He is the youngest player to represent Wales when he made his debut for the national team in 2013, and has since gone on to make 9 appearances for the Welsh national team.
Why Klopp should give Harry Wilson a chance next season
Wilson is a supremely talented player who will succeed wherever he plays – at Liverpool or elsewhere. The Welshman has great technical ability as he is lethal in set-piece situations as well as in open play.
The 22-year old has played in numerous positions for Derby this season – out wide on both flanks, behind the striker, and in central midfield too.
The Welshman has the vision to seek a player out, while the technique and composure to complete a through ball over the top or on the ground. Wilson can beat defenders with his confident dribbling, despite not having blistering pace.
The attacker could offer a different option to Klopp as he has the ability to break down defences with his passing.
In tight games where the opposition sit deep, Wilson could be a useful player who can make a difference with his direct running and passing.
A young player like him has to be given the chance to shine, and with Klopp’s past successes in offering young players a chance, Wilson should be given an opportunity to showcase his talent at Liverpool next season.
