Manchester United‘s troubles were compounded by the announcement made by Ander Herrera, who revealed that he would be leaving the club on a free transfer.
However, if reports are to be believed, the Red Devils may have found the man to replace Herrera in the side, Newcastle United’s 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to reports.
Longstaff has come through the ranks at the Magpies, and only made his debut for Newcastle United in December 2018. But since then, he has featured quite often for Rafa Benitez’s side, playing 12 games for the club, 11 of which were starts.
The 21-year old would have played more games for the team if he hadn’t sustained a knee injury in March, which put him out of action for the rest of the season.
In his 12 games for Newcastle United, Longstaff scored twice – once in the win against Burnley, and the other in the FA Cup. The young Englishman recently signed a contract with Newcastle United and the Magpies are reportedly not interested in selling him.
Is Longstaff the freshness Manchester United need?
The 21-year-old has shot to the limelight after a string of impressive performances for Newcastle United this season, and has been touted as a future England player.
The lanky midfielder is a neat passer of the ball and has good vision. In fact, some have likened him to former Manchester United player and current coach, Michael Carrick.
Longstaff is calm and composed in midfield with the ball at his feet, while also showing the ability to press and win the ball back in midfield. He keeps the play ticking, and has shown good passing range, while also being a determined figure in midfield.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer perhaps wants to build a young team with homegrown players playing an important role in the team. The club have also been linked with another exciting prospect, Swansea City’s Daniel James, while 19-year-old Ryan Sessegnon is another player linked with Manchester United.
Longstaff could be a useful signing, a player that has the potential to make it big in the Premier League, and with Manchester United needing some young blood in midfield, he ticks all the boxes.
