Transfer Story:
High on the what once seemed impossible, Manchester United defeated Manchester City at the Etihad in the weekend to bring in a sense of excitement, combined with a curiosity of what would transpire in the coming weeks. With Michael Carrick having clearly joined the coaching management of the first-team and Marouane Fellaini’s future being uncertain, United will find themselves short of numbers in central midfield next season. With the attacking department now more or less sorted, the Red Devils will most probably concentrate on bringing in some quality midfielders next season.
Paul Pogba has thrived whenever he has been played in a three-man midfield setup and the Frenchman considerably increases the entire team’s quality in the midfield. Hence, Fred being linked to United does not come as a surprise as the midfielder has been on the radar of apparently both the Manchester clubs in recent times. Shakhtar Donetsk played hardball with Manchester City when Pep Guardiola’s side enquired for the Brazilian in January. Now, Jose seems to have the intent to match Donetsk’s demands and hence can end up paying the asking price, the report in Mirror says.
Fred: A player in demand
The Brazilian primarily plays deep in the midfield but possesses the ability to carry the ball forward with his tenacity and footwork. Fred is adept at reading the game well and breaks attack with his brilliant positioning. Fred is strong and can hold the ball up, whilst making tricky runs ahead to get to the end of crosses. Fred guards the defence well and often stays deep, but is not averse to going upfield when required.
In 8 Champions League matches this season, he has recorded 2.9 tackles in each game whilst also intercepting an average of 1.1 balls per game. With his robust physique and strong defending skills, Fred wouldn’t be facing too many issues whilst adapting to the nature and style of the game in the Premier League, if indeed he makes the move.
Should Manchester United go all in?
Well, United most certainly need to fill up players at the centre of the park and Fred would be one of the most suitable candidates to head to Old Trafford in the summer. His tenacity, high energy levels, good technique on the ball and the willingness to blend his attacking and defensive duties perfectly might entice Jose Mourinho to outbid Pep in this closely contested race.
