A few months ago, Manchester United were sceptical of the future of their goalkeeper David De Gea at Old Trafford as interest from Real Madrid existed. The Red Devils even tabled a fresh contract before the Spanish international three months ago to refrain themselves from losing him to the Spanish giants.
However, Real Madrid lured Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea to meet their goalkeeping needs and interestingly, De Gea didn’t force his way to Santiago Bernabeu. Although fresh terms have not been signed by the custodian, Manchester United are well aware of his current contractual situation.
The 27-year-old’s current deal with the Premier League giants is due to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign and Jose Mourinho’s camp are desperate to make him sign on a deal to avoid losing him for free next summer. As per Express, De Gea wants a bumper increase in his pay for showing loyalty towards his employers.
He has reportedly asked for a £350,000-a-week salary to bring himself in parity with Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba as the highest paid players of the Manchester-based outfit. De Gea’s proposed contract would run until 2023 and he would be in line to earn a whopping £72.8m over the course of the new contract if the same materializes.
