An injury-raved Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to sign Barcelona ace Ansu Fati in this January transfer window.
Spurs have endured a difficult season in the Premier League and currently lie 15th. They lost 11 of 21 Premier League games, which has put Ange Postecoglou’s position in a spot of bother. Yet, the club chiefs are fully backing their boss and want to reinforce his squad. The Australian tactician also revealed that the club are working hard behind the scenes to bring in new faces.
According to a report from Spanish outlet SPORT, Tottenham are set to battle London rivals West Ham United for the loan signing of Ansu Fati.
Fati, 22, is on the verge of leaving Barcelona as he struggles to find a place in the squad. Hansi Flick’s recent messages have been crystal clear regarding the player’s future. The versatile forward was left out of the squad for both Supercopa matches and was also absent from the lineup against Real Betis in the Copa del Rey, plunging his Camp Nou future into doubt.
The potential availability of the Spaniard has put Tottenham and West Ham on red alert. With his contract not expiring until 2027, a six-month loan deal appears most feasible at this time.
Ansu Fati to Tottenham — A gamble but Spurs must roll the dice
Tottenham are still without several players due to injury. The defence remains particularly depleted, with first-team defenders including Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Destiny Udogie all injured.
Up front, record-signing Dominic Solanke has barely had a rest following his summer move from Bournemouth. This is due to Richarlison spending the majority of the first half of the season on the sidelines. Also, Wilson Odobert has been out injured since October, while loanee Timo Werner recently became the latest injury casualty for Spurs after tweaking his hamstring.
So, the Lilywhites could do well with attacking reinforcements, and Ansu Fati fits the bill nicely.
The Spaniard broke into Barcelona’s first team in 2019 as a teenager and had been touted as a potential superstar were he to live up to the lofty expectations anticipated for him. However, persistent injury problems in recent years have stalled his progress, and while he spent time on loan at Brighton last season, the lightning-fast attacker failed to make much of an impact.
Given his patchy injury record, Fati’s signing perhaps on a six-month loan would be a gamble for Spurs. However, in a market where bringing in quality players are extremely tough, Tottenham must take a punt on the Barcelona talent to enhance the depth of their attacking roster. If Fati can keep himself fit, he’d enjoy a lot of minutes under Big Ange and potentially challenge Son Heung-min for a spot in the first XI.
All in all, Spurs must try beating West Ham to Fati’s signature before the transfer window slams shut.
