Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette could be on the move in the summer, as several clubs are in the race to sign the Frenchman, including Barcelona. The 29-year-old, who has been with the club since 2017, has scored 59 goals for the English club.
As per Calciomercato, the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Alexandre Lacazette. The French striker’s agent is trying to find a new club for his client, and the Gunners forward wants to be a first-choice striker in an ambitious project. The report states that Lacazette currently earns €6 million each year. His current contract with the club expires in 2022.
Alexandre Lacazette has won the FA Cup in his four-year stint with Arsenal.
Alexandre Lacazette: A good option for the Blaugrana?
Barcelona have missed the presence of a prolific centre forward, following the departure of Luis Suarez. Suarez, who moved to Atletico Madrid last summer, has racked up 18 goals for the club this campaign, showing the Catalan club what they have missed in the 2020-21 season.
Barca need to sign a goalscoring centre forward who can lead the line, score goals, and create chances for his teammates. But, that player may not necessarily be Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman has blown hot and cold at the North London club and hasn’t lived up to expectations. His best season in front of goal was in the 2018–19 season, where he scored 19 goals in all competitions, of which 13 were in the Premier League. He racked up just 12 goals in 39 appearances last season, which isn’t good enough for a first-choice forward at a club like Arsenal.
Lacazette, if signed by Barcelona, will be a short-term solution or someone who can add depth to their squad. The Frenchman is turning 30 later this year and does not seem to possess the ability to become a better player than he is now.
Barcelona should instead invest in a younger striker around whom the club can build a team around, as well as look towards a Messi-less future. Alexandre Lacazette would not be a good signing for Barca and would be another in the list of poor signings that the La Liga club have made in recent years, something the new President Joan Laporta will be desperate to avoid.
