Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing former Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who currently plies his trade for Paris Saint-Germain. Gueye could be on the way out of the Ligue 1 club, despite playing a big role in the French team’s 2019-20 season.
As per Le10 Sport, PSG want to get rid of Idrissa Gueye and they will look to do so after their Champions League campaign. Wolves are one of two clubs interested in signing him, as the Senegalese international has also been linked with a move to Manchester United. Gueye made the move to PSG at the start of the 2019-20 season, joining the club from Everton for a fee of £30 million.
He played 33 times for the French giants, scoring once and assisting twice. Gueye’s current deal with the club expires in 2023.
Idrissa Gueye: A top option for Nuno?
Idrissa Gueye was fantastic for Everton when he played for the Merseyside club in the Premier League. The 30-year-old’s great form for Everton in the 2018-19 season, where he was awarded Everton’s Player’s Player of the Year, resulted in PSG’s interest in him. The defensive midfielder is solid at the base of midfield acting as an excellent defensive shield for the backline.
Gueye has a very good work-rate, the ability to spot threats and negate them, as well as bring the ball out of dangerous situations. He averaged a whopping 3.3 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game in Ligue 1 in 2019-20. He is also a good short passer, picking up the ball from defenders to play it to the full-backs or his fellow midfielders. In a dominant PSG side, he averaged 78.3 passes per game in the French league.
The Senegal international would be a fantastic addition to a competent Wolves side and could help them get back into the European spots for next season. Gueye is vastly experienced, is a dependable figure, and would add depth to the Wolves squad. Wolves have good options in midfield, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho, but those three are the only solid options in midfield for manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Gueye could be a player who would enable Wolves to be more attacking as he provides security to the backline and allows the attacking players to flourish. Much of the goalscoring burden was on Raul Jimenez’s shoulder this season and Nuno would ideally want the advanced midfielders to chip in with a fair share of goals as well.
