Chelsea could re-sign Declan Rice from West Ham United if their quota of world-class midfielders is depleted this summer. Rice, who has become one of the Premier League’s most impressive defensive midfielders, was previously a part of the Chelsea academy, before joining the Hammers in 2015.
According to Mirror Football, Spanish giants Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante. If that transfer materialises, the Blues could make a move for Rice to replace Kante in the Chelsea midfield.
Declan Rice has made over 100 appearances for the Hammers in all competitions since his debut in 2017. He has become one of the most important players for the struggling London side. The 21-year-old’s current deal with West Ham expires in 2024.
Declan Rice: A Move In The Right Direction
Declan Rice has blossomed into a solid defensive midfielder for the Hammers over the last few seasons, which also earned him a call-up to the England national team. Rice was released by Chelsea in 2014, following which he joined West Ham, progressed through the ranks, and has become one of their most impressive players.
The Englishman is a tall and strong defensive midfielder who has shown great composure and presence of mind in the deep midfield role. Rice likes to make firm tackles and is quick enough to make vital interceptions in the midfield area as well. In a below-par side, Rice has averaged 3 tackles per game in the 2019-20 season as well as 2.1 interceptions.
Declan Rice is also a decent passer of the ball, who likes to keep it simple and keep the ball moving from his deep role in midfield. He also, occasionally, ventures forward, using his long legs to get from one box to another quickly. While Rice does not have the pressing or intercepting ability of Kante yet, he is much stronger than the Frenchman and likes to put a tackle in as well while his superior height also makes him a menace in both boxes.
Chelsea, under Frank Lampard, has worn a new and fresh look with young English players forming the core of the team and running the show. A move for Rice will be in a somewhat similar direction and has a high chance of being a successful choice which will see the position secure for years to come.
He is a player with tremendous potential and is one that could grow into a more rounded player as a part of a much stronger squad. He would be the much-needed screen that the Chelsea defence desperately requires. Having previously been a part of the Chelsea set-up, Rice would not take a lot of time to settle into the new surroundings, if he makes the move to Stamford Bridge.
