Sheffield United Linked With A £27million Move For Belgian Ace: Is He Worth The Fuss?

Sheffield United are the latest club to join the race to sign highly-rated midfielder Sander Berge from Belgium club Genk, as per reports.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder has impressed for Genk, which has attracted a lot of interest from several Premier League sides.

As per Daily Mail, the Blades could make a move for the Norwegian international before the end of the January transfer window.

Sheffield United could reportedly dish out a bid of around £27 million for Berge, who has been with Genk since 2017.

Berge has been linked with a move to Liverpool as well as Chelsea in the last few months. Several clubs are reportedly interested in Berge, but only the Blades are contemplating a bid as of now.

He has just one and a half years remaining on his current deal at Genk, and it seems like he could be on his way out of the Belgian club. Berge has made over 110 appearances for the club since signing for them in 2017.

Sander Berge – Is he worth the fuss?

Sheffield United have done exceedingly well since their return to the Premier League, and are just a point away from 6th-placed Tottenham. The Blades have fought well and given a good account of themselves against almost all teams that they have faced.

They could compete for a European spot if they can keep their key players fit, and one or two additions in the January transfer window could give manager Chris Wilder more options.

Sander Berge would be a very good signing for them in January, as he is a player who could fit well in the Blades’ system. The tall and imposing Norwegian – who stands at 6’5″ – is a good passer, and provides great intensity and drive from midfield.

Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or a central midfielder, Berge likes to move forward with the ball and is quick with the ball at his feet.

His height allows him to intercept passes quickly as well and set up counter-attacks. In Sheffield United’s intensive system, where midfielders are required to bomb forward, Berge would be the perfect fit in the midfield role.

Berge is just 21 years of age and the fee quoted by Genk seems justified for a player of his calibre and potential.
