Aston Villa Eyeing A Transfer For Former Liverpool Star: A Top Option For Smith?

Aston Villa could sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina from Italian side AC Milan, it has been claimed.

Reina has not been used much by Milan since signing for them in the 2018 summer transfer window. The Spaniard, who turns 38 this year, is looking to extend his career further.

As per Daily Mail, Reina could be allowed to leave Milan, having made just two appearances this season.

The Spanish ‘keeper is reportedly interested in coming back to the Premier League, which gives Villa some hope in potentially securing his signature.

Reina had won three Premier League Golden Glove awards for keeping the most number of clean-sheets while playing for Liverpool almost a decade ago.

The Spaniard’s current contract with AC Milan expires only in 2021, but he could be available for a cut-price deal, considering his age.

Reina played for Napoli and Bayern Munich following his exit from Liverpool, and then joined Milan on a free transfer from Napoli.

Pepe Reina – A top option in goal for Aston Villa

Pepe Reina is an experienced goalkeeper who has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

The Spaniard is a very good shot-stopper and in one-on-one situations. The 37-year-old could probably still do a job for a Premier League side, and Aston Villa should consider signing him.

Reina’s leadership and experience will be a boon for the Aston Villa side, who will want to stave off relegation this season. With Tom Heaton and No. 2 Jed Steer injured, Villa need a strong ‘keeper to fill the gap left in the starting XI.

The Lions could probably take Reina on loan from Milan till the end of the season, before deciding on signing him on a permanent deal. Heaton has been ruled out for the season, which means that a loan deal to bring Reina would suit manager Dean Smith.

Signing Reina on loan will also give Smith more funds to sign a top-quality centre-forward, as their summer signing, Wesley, has also been ruled out for the season.

Reina could be a very good short-term signing, one that could add quality and experience to the Villa starting XI, and help them to safety.
