Manchester United Touted To Splash The Cash For 23-Goal Star: The Forward They Need?

Manchester United could join Chelsea in the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, it has been claimed.

The German forward has been in splendid form over the last few seasons, which has attracted interest from several top clubs in Europe.

As per Daily Express, the German club could let Werner leave, but only in the summer. The report further states that United have scouted the 23-year-old, but Leipzig will not let him leave in the January transfer window as the club are at the top of the Bundesliga table, and would need him in their title run.

Werner reportedly wants to play in the Premier League, with United and Chelsea the big English sides interested in him.

The former Stuttgart man has been in great form, scoring 23 goals and 10 assists in 25 games in all competitions this season.

We are only at the halfway stage of the season, yet this is his best goal return in his entire career. Werner’s contract with Leipzig expires in 2023 as he signed an extension on his contract in 2019.

Is Timo Werner the goalscorer Manchester United need?

Manchester United need to sign several top quality players in many areas of the pitch, including up top, as they did not replace Romelu Lukaku, who left in the summer for Inter Milan.

The Red Devils have used Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as strikers this season, but it’s quite clear that neither of them are traditional No. 9’s.

Werner is a quality striker, who can inflict problems on opposing defences with his pace and dribbling ability, as well as his goalscoring prowess.

The German is a player who would fit very well in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s system where he likes players who can play on the counter-attack. Werner likes to drop deep and pick up the ball to run at defences, while also having the skill and speed to play on the shoulder of the last defender.

Anthony Martial has done well in some games, but has struggled when defences have sat deep. He, along with Rashford and Daniel James, have done exceedingly well in counter-attacking situations, but have failed to perform when their team has dominated possession.

Werner’s addition could change that as he is not just a goalscorer but a link player who can drop deep, move into wide areas, and also use his pace and dribbling ability to get past defenders.

These qualities along with his phenomenal goalscoring rate mean that he should be at the top of Manchester United’s shortlist.
