Everton are lining up a surprise £30million bid for German midfielder Emre Can, it has been claimed.
Can previously played in the Premier League for Everton’s arch-rivals Liverpool. Though he was fairly consistent for the Reds, he has not been able to replicate his form at Juventus.
As per the Mirror, Everton will compete with Inter Milan for Can, but could find it easier to sign him as Inter are unwilling to match Can’s salary and the price-tag Juventus have put on the midfielder.
The German is a product of the Bayern Munich academy, who made the headlines when he was at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
In four seasons with Liverpool, Can made 166 appearances, scoring 14 goals in the process. He made a switch to Italian giants Juventus at the end of the 2017/18 season. Though the Turin side managed to land the midfielder for free, he hasn’t been really adapted to life in Italy.
In his first season, Can made 37 appearances and scored 4 goals. However, things have taken a wrong turn for him after the arrival of Maurizio Sarri. Can has not been given enough opportunities this season, and has played in only 8 games.
Emre Can: Will he solve Everton’s midfield problems?
Everton are having a rough season, again. They were only fighting for survival, but the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as the manager has worked well for the Toffees.
Ancelotti have made some good changes to the side, and he was quick to spot that Everton’s main problem lies in the midfield.
Everton don’t lack quality midfielders, however, their side has been plagued with injuries. They signed Jean-Philippe Gbamin in the summer, but he has been out with a thigh injury for a long time.
Their main creative spark in the midfield, Andre Gomez is nursing a horrific ankle injury which he sustained in the game against Tottenham Hotspur. Though Gomes is making good progress, it is unlikely that the Portuguese midfielder will make a comeback this season.
In such a situation, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies are the only viable alternatives for Ancelotti. However, Delph is now way past his prime while Davies has the habit of making a casual mistake or two in every other game.
Can would provide stability to the midfield, and control the scheme of things from the centre of the park. He can be used in the box to box role as he likes getting forward, so that’s another thing he would add to the team.
