Manchester United could once again pursue the signing of Atletico Madrid midfield Saul Niguez, if reports are be believed.
The Spaniard, who has been with Atletico Madrid since 2008, has made over 250 appearances for the club, since debuting in 2012.
As per Spanish website AS, Atletico could sell Saul to strengthen their attack, if they can’t sell other players.
The Spanish side want to bring in a striker and hope to sell Thomas Lemar to fund that purchase, but if they can’t sell Lemar, they could part ways with Saul.
Saul midfielder has a lengthy contract, which is set to expire only in 2026. According to Mirror Football, Saul has a release clause of around £135 million in his current deal.
The 25-year-old midfielder has scored 35 times and made 18 assists for the club in all competitions, while scoring thrice in 19 appearances for the Spanish national team.
Saul Niguez would be a top option for Solskjaer at Manchester United
Saul has been one of the most important players for Atletico Madrid in the last few years, and one who is becoming a key player for his national side as well.
He is an all-action midfielder who can play deep as a defensive midfielder, or further forward as a box-to-box midfielder.
Saul can play in central midfield, as well as on the left or right, as a wide player. This season, he has also played as a left-back for Atletico Madrid, showing his incredible versatility.
The 25-year old is a player who can contribute defensively with his aggression, work-rate, energy and sound tackling. He has averaged 2.1 tackles per game in La Liga this season and 1.8 clearances per game. He is a decent passer of the ball, making an average of 2.3 long balls per game.
The Spaniard would be a very good addition to the Manchester United squad that has lacked quality midfielder in the middle of the park, while Solskjaer also lacks options to choose from.
Scott McTominay and Fred have done decently well over the last few games, but United’s other options in midfield have either been injured or are in poor form. Nemanja Matic looks like he is at the twilight of his career, while Paul Pogba has been injured for a while.
The signing of Saul would give United a player of high quality in the middle of the park, who can tackle, press, and move the ball quickly to attack. He is exactly the kind of player that Solskjaer needs to make his current system work more effectively.
