Manchester United linked with £86m-rated striking sensation: Good option for Ole?

Manchester United are one of the many clubs interested in signing Norwegian sensation Erling Braut Haland from German club RB Salzburg. The 19-year old is the son of former Leeds United and Manchester City defender Alf-Inge Haland.

Tuttosport are reporting that United are in the running to sign the youngster, who has been in scintillating form this season. Arsenal are another club reportedly interested in signing him, as per the report. The report further states that Salzburg want £86 million for him.

Haland has previously been managed by current United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, during Solskjaer’s spell as manager of Norwegian side Molde. Haland joined RB Salzburg earlier this season from the Norwegian club and has gone on to make a big impression. The young striker has scored 23 goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this season, including 7 goals in 4 appearances in the Champions League.

He has four years remaining on his current contract at the club, having signed a four-year deal when he joined earlier this season.

Should they pursue Haland’s signature?

Erling Braut Haland has been in phenomenal form for Austrian club RB Salzburg this season, registering 23 goals and 6 assists so far in all competitions. The Norwegian is a centre-forward who comes alive in the box and is a very good finisher. A majority of Haland’s shots on goal have come from inside the penalty box. Out of his average of 2.8 shots per game, 2 come from inside the area.

The 6’4″ striker has been likened to former United striker Romelu Lukaku, thanks to his big frame and also because he is a left-footed player. But Haland is deadlier and more clinical in the box than the Belgian from what we have seen so far.

He is comfortable with his back to the goal but is also adept at making darting runs past his marker and is aware of the space around him.

United should pursue him, but a fee of £86 million seems very steep at the moment. The player knows the manager and vice versa, which could perhaps help in making a deal happen, while Solskjaer also knows what Haland is capable of.

Ole has the versatile Marcus Rashford and the inexperienced Mason Greenwood as the strikers at his disposal right now and there are question marks as to whether it is enough for a club like Manchester United who, traditionally would want their strikers to score 20+ goals every season which they don’t seem to have at the moment.

The Red Devils need such a forward with that level of consistency, which Haland looks like he has but it will surely be a wait and watch policy throughout the season even if they decide to make a decision in the next summer itself.
