Newcastle United are weighing up a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose, who has been dropped from the Spurs’ preseason squad as an exit looks likely.
According to a report from the Daily Star, newly appointed boss at St. James Park, Steve Bruce is keen to add the English International to the Magpies dressing room ahead of the next season.
The 29-year-old, who is valued at £15 million by the north London club, also garnered interest from Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
The full-back had a stellar campaign under Mauricio Pochettino as he helped Lilywhites reach the Champions League final, and manage a top 4 finish in the Premier League.
A good move by Bruce to target Danny Rose?
Newcastle currently have two left-backs in Paul Dummett and Achraf Lazaar at the club, while Matt Ritchie can also fill in if needed.
Rose, meanwhile, would bring a lot more to the table; his versatile nature allows him to feature as a left-back or a wing-back. The Spurs left-back is a fine dribbler of the ball, and is known for his attacking forays. His passing is also pretty impressive, so he can link up well with the attackers.
The 29-year old averaged a pass success of 76.4%, and managed 1.2 dribbles per game last season.
Rose is also a tenacious defender, which is why he was such a good fit in Pochettino’s system. He managed 0.9 clearances, 0.8 interceptions and 1.7 tackles per game last season which highlights his spatial awareness and rock-solid attitude to jump into tackles if the need arises.
While Dummett is a good full-back defensively, Rose is a more complete player and can improve the overall quality of the first team.
Signing Rose, however, won’t be easy by any means with European giants PSG and Juventus interested in him as well.
Newcastle need to shore up their defence, and considering Rose’s arrival would also add an attacking outlet on the left, the Magpies should splash the cash for his signature.
Ritchie often played a more withdrawn role at left wing-back last season, and should the club sign Rose, the Scotland international will have more freedom in the attacking areas of the pitch, thereby adding more balance to the squad.
