Kieran Trippier, by his own admission, didn’t have the best of seasons at Tottenham Hotspur in the 2018-19 campaign but the former Burnley player has garnered interest from various clubs, and the latest to be linked with him is Italian giants Juventus, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The Englishman has been shortlisted by the Serie A champions to replace Joao Cancelo, who has been linked with moves to both Manchester clubs.
Trippier recently spoke about his future but did not squash rumours of him moving away from Spurs:
“I don’t know. I go home now, spend time with my family, just recover after a long, difficult season.
Everybody’s got a decision to make, no matter what. Obviously, this club has been very good for me over the last few years but I’ll enjoy my summer, come back in pre-season and that’s when I’ll sit down with the manager and have a talk about my future,” said the right-back on his future.
Following Spurs’ loss to Premier League rivals Liverpool in the Champions League final, Trippier admitted that his form wasn’t good in the season and that he knew the reasons why England manager Gareth Southgate dropped him from the latest England squad.
Trippier joined Spurs from Burnley in 2015, but could not cement a place in the starting XI due to the presence of Kyle Walker, who was in phenomenal form.
However, since Walker’s departure to Manchester City, Trippier has become Spurs’ No. 1 right-back ahead of Serge Aurier.
Should Spurs sell him?
It seems that Trippier has set his sights on a move away from Spurs and from the Premier League as he has been linked with moves to Juventus and Napoli in recent weeks. The English full-back has grown as a player under Mauricio Pochettino and even became England’s No. 1 right-back before the 2018 World Cup.
If Trippier has his head turned by clubs in Europe, Spurs must sell him. His current Spurs contract expires in 2022 which would be good leverage to get a decent transfer fee for him.
Spurs already have a good full-back in Aurier, while 22-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters, who has come through the ranks at Spurs, could also be given an opportunity at right-back.
The north London side could reinvest the money they receive from the sale of Trippier to sign players in other positions which they will desperately need with the news that Christian Eriksen will be leaving the club in the summer.
