Tottenham Hotspur star midfielder Christian Eriksen revealed recently that he wants to leave the English club and was quickly linked with a move to Real Madrid. After a lull in the developments regarding the Eriksen to Real Madrid rumours, reports now suggest that Spurs could still be interested in letting go of Eriksen, but will want a Real Madrid player in return.
The Sun are reporting that Spurs will want Madrid’s Marco Asensio to be included in any deal that will see Eriksen move to the Bernabeu. The report further states that the Spanish giants are willing to pay £45 million and young midfielder Dani Ceballos in a deal, but Spurs want Asensio instead. Madrid may not be keen on letting go of Asensio as Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is a big fan of the 23-year-old.
Asensio joined Madrid in 2014 for a fee of €3.9 million and has gone on to become a key player for the club. The winger has made over 100 appearances for the Spanish club, scoring 27 goals in all competitions. In the 2018-19 season, he scored 6 goals and provided 7 assists in the 44 games that he played for Madrid in all competitions.
Asensio has won the Champions League twice and La Liga once since signing for Madrid, and has also made his Spanish national team debut, playing 22 games and scoring once.
Would this be a good choice?
Marco Asensio is an exciting young player who has been a key player for Madrid over the last few seasons. The Spaniard can play on either wing, while also being capable of playing as an attacking midfielder. A good dribbler of the ball with a wide range of passing, Asensio is a quality playmaker who can cross and pass to attackers, as well as drive into the box with his runs.
The left-footed player likes to move inside into central areas from wide positions and have an influence in the final third with his through balls. Asensio could be a shrewd signing for Spurs who need to add depth to their squad, while Mauricio Pochettino’s history of working with and developing young players will certainly have an influence on the development of Asensio.
While he will not be the solution to their midfield woes should Eriksen leave, Spurs can look towards Asensio to provide a similar amount of productivity in the final third while their pursuit of Tanguy Ndombele seems to be nearing a fruitful conclusion. Ndombele can provide the drive and edge to the midfield which has been missing since Mousa Dembele’s departure while Asensio will fortify the young attack with his zeal and trickery.
