Liverpool seem to want to add more firepower to their team as they have been linked with Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio, as per Mundo Deportivo. The Merseyside club have had a great season, reaching the Champions League final after an epic comeback win against Barcelona, while also pushing Manchester City to the limit and taking the title race to the final day of the season.
While the trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have once again been in great form, the other attackers, apart from maybe Xherdan Shaqiri, have not made a big impact over any period of time. To challenge on all fronts, Liverpool need to bring more quality players which could be the reason why they might move to sign the 23-year-old Spanish winger.
Asensio hasn’t had a memorable season for Real Madrid, which could be down to the turmoil at the Spanish club, which has seen him drop down the pecking order after the arrival of Zinedine Zidane. He has a contract till 2023 at the club and is apparently valued at ‘€700m’ by Perez.
Could the Asensio move work for Klopp?
Asensio, since joining Madrid in 2014, he has risen up the ranks, after a few seasons out on loan, scoring 10 and 11 goals, respectively, in the last two seasons. His numbers have dropped this season, though, with the talented attacker scoring just 6 goals and 4 assists.
Predominantly a left-footed player, Asensio is a great passer of the ball, putting in key crosses and through balls for the attackers. He is a player who likes cutting into the centre of the box with his quick feet and feeding his team-mates or shooting.
Asensio would be a good fit in Jurgen Klopp’s style of play where he likes to keep possession of the ball and put immense pressure on the opponent’s defence. The 23-year-old also brings a winning mentality, having been a part of two Champions League-winning sides, while he also won one La Liga title. Liverpool do not have too many options on the left side of attack, with Sadio Mane the only quality left-sided attacking player.
Although he has had an average season, Asensio has the talent to dominate opponents and blossom into a quality player.
And as last night hammered home the point that Klopp is building something special at Anfield, there will the allure of joining this football revolution with Jurgen at the helm.
