Tammy Abraham under Frank Lampard: A last chance for the Chelsea forward?

Chelsea are closing in on appointing Frank Lampard as the new manager of the club as he was granted permission to speak to the Blues by his current club Derby County.

Lampard is likely to take over at Stamford Bridge following a one-year stint with Derby County in the Championship, where he took the side to the Championship play-off final, before they eventually lost to Aston Villa.

The former midfielder has a difficult task on his hands as Chelsea will not be allowed to sign new players in the next two transfer windows, following a ban imposed by FIFA on them.

This means that he will have to use the current players that he has as well as move players from the reserves and the academy in the 2019-20 season.

One current Chelsea player who is excited about next season despite the transfer ban is 21-year-old striker Tammy Abraham, who returns to Stamford Bridge after an impressive spell on loan at Aston Villa in the Championship, where he ended the season as the second highest goalscorer in the league with 26 goals.

“This year is the most important year for us. It is now or never. There will never be a better time to play the youngsters.

“Of course the transfer ban is probably not what the club wanted but for us it is exciting. I am excited and I am sure the rest of the players are,” Abraham was quoted as saying by Goal.

Abraham believes that the transfer ban will benefit Chelsea’s young players, who are regarded as some of the best in England.

The young striker has delivered at the Championship level, having 23 goals in his loan spell with Bristol City in the Championship 2016–17, as well as last season with Aston Villa, but his lone spell in the Premier League with Swansea City wasn’t as good as he scored just 8 goals the whole season.

Last chance for Tammy Abraham next season?

Chelsea have an exciting group of youngsters who have been touted to be future England stars, with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Tammy Abraham, and Mason Mount impressing in recent years.

The transfer ban comes as a blessing in disguise for these young stars who would probably have not got the opportunity to play with the first-team if it wasn’t imposed.

Lampard gave the younger players a chance at Derby as he made Chelsea’s two loan players, Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount an important part of his team, while also playing Harry Wilson and 18-year-old Jayden Bogle, consistently.

Abraham should be given opportunities as Chelsea do not have any other strikers at the moment, with Gonzalo Higuaín set to return to Juventus, and Alvaro Morata on loan at Atletico Madrid.

Abraham, however, has to deliver this season as Chelsea will be able to sign new players by next summer’s transfer window, and a striker would be at the top of their wishlist.
