One of Manchester United‘s transfer targets so far in this window has been Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who had a great season for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Palace are reportedly demanding £60 million for the young right-back, which may be significantly higher than what the Red Devils are willing to pay.
Now, the Sun claim that Manchester United might shift their focus to Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries, who also had a fantastic season for PSV Eindhoven.
It is believed that Dumfries can be signed for a fee of around £25 million. The 23-year-old right-back could be United’s third option to sign at right-back after they were priced out of a deal to sign Wan-Bissaka and Paris Saint-Germain right-back Thomas Meunier.
PSV narrowly missed out on the Eredivisie title, falling three points short of winners Ajax, while failing to impress in the other competitions. But Dumfries had a great season, which was rewarded with a spot in the Eredivisie Team of the Year, while also earning his first national team call-up last year.
Dumfries moved to PSV from SC Heerenveen in last year’s summer transfer window, and played 43 games in all competitions, scoring 4 and assisting 7 times. The young Dutchman has so far earned 5 national team caps.
Is Denzel Dumfries good alternative to Wan-Bissaka?
Wan-Bissaka is a fantastic talent, who will go on to become an important player for the English national team and whichever club he plays for next.
Crystal Palace want to do everything in their power to keep hold of him, and have put an inflated price tag of £60 million on him.
Dumfries, meanwhile, will be available for less than half that money and could be a useful player, having similar qualities as the young Englishman.
The Dutch right-back likes to attack from the full-back position, making strong runs with the ball at his feet and eager to join in on the attack in every defence to attack transition phase.
The 6’1″ defender is physically strong and can outmuscle opponents, while also being great in the air.
Confident in attack and defence, Dumfries could turn out to be a shrewd signing for the Red Devils and could offer something similar to Wan-Bissaka at a much cheaper price.
