Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes is a player who has been tracked by some of the big clubs in Europe, from Manchester City to neighbours Manchester United, but now Champions League winners Liverpool have also entered the race to sign the midfielder.
Manchester United were frontrunners in the race to secure the services of Fernandes, but it seems that the deal to bring him to Old Trafford is not done yet.
As per Portuguese outlet Record cited by Mirror, Fernandes’ agent is set to travel to England to have discussions with various clubs before he makes his decision.
Fernandes would cost £71 million for any of the clubs looking to sign him in the summer and that Sporting Lisbon will not agree to a fee lesser than that.
Fernandes – Profile
The 24-year-old Portuguese midfielder had a fabulous 2018-19 season where he mustered 32 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, helping the team to two Cups in the 2018-19 season.
Fernandes made his national team debut in 2017, and has played 11 games, scoring one goal for Portugal.
He has played in multiple positions but primarily plays as a central midfielder and attacking midfielder, while also having the ability to play out on the wings.
How will Fernandes fit in at Liverpool?
One area where Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team could improve is goals from central midfield, with the highest scoring midfielder in the 2018-19 season being Georginio Wijnaldum, who scored 5 goals.
Fernandes could remedy that problem as he’s been a prolific goal-scorer and assist maker.
The 24-year-old midfielder is a good passer and crosser of the ball, and has the ability to shoot from distance as well. Fernandes is an all-round player who can pass, shoot, dribble, and make a huge influence in the team’s overall play.
Liverpool have quite a few options in midfield, from Naby Keita to Fabinho to captain Jordan Henderson, and Georginio Wijnaldum, while James Milner is another option in midfield.
Fernandes, however, would offer something different to the Liverpool side as Liverpool have missed a goal-scoring midfielder since the departures of Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho.
At 24 years of age, Fernandes has the potential to be an even better player.
