Following Leeds United‘s announcement that manager Marcelo Bielsa will stay another year at the club, the rumour mill has been abuzz with speculation regarding the players that the manager could sign.
Bielsa’s side have now been linked with Premier League winger Helder Costa, who is currently with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
As per the Football Insider, Bielsa wants to bring the winger to Elland Road on a loan deal.
Helder Costa – Profile
Costa joined Wolves on loan in 2016, making the move a permanent one in January 2017, and helped the side secure promotion to the Premier League.
In their first season back in the top-flight of English football, Wolves, under manager Nuno Espírito Santo, finished 7th in the league and secured a spot in Europa League for next season.
Costa, however, was not a first-choice player in the starting lineup as Wolves moved to a formation that used wing-backs rather than wingers, which resulted in Costa being dropped to the bench.
The £13 million signing from Benfica made 30 appearances in all competitions for Wolves, of which 18 were starts. He ended the season with one goal and two assists – all coming in the Premier League.
Helder Costa would be a top addition to Leeds United
Leeds United narrowly missed out on promotion despite leading the Championship table and dominating the league. They fell out of the automatic qualifying spots and were then knocked out of the playoffs by Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
Bielsa will look to put the disappointment of the 2018-19 season behind him, strengthen the squad and target qualification to the Premier League once again.
Costa would be a great addition to the Leeds team as he has the flair and technical ability to cause opposition defences problems in the Championship.
The right winger is a left-footed player – more of an inverted winger — who has great close control and is a good dribbler of the ball, beating defenders with his tricks and flicks.
Leeds will need to sign a winger before the start of next season as Jack Harrison, who was on loan from Manchester City, has returned to his parent club, which leaves the Whites with just one quality winger in Pablo Hernandez, who was in phenomenal form for the side in the 2018-19 season.
Costa was a top player in the Championship at it seems like a level where he can thrive when compared to the Premier League, and he has the abilities that suit Bielsa’s system as well.
