Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign Matt Targett from Southampton, it has been revealed.
The Villans are desperate to strengthen their squad, and will spend £17 million to sign Targett, it has been claimed by Sky Sports. The deal is expected to be completed on Monday once the player passes his medical.
Aston Villa have been active in the summer transfer window, and have already secured the services of Kortney Hause, Wesley, Jota, and Anwar El Ghazi.
Dean Smith’s side have done good business so far as they hope to stay in the top flight next season.
Matt Targett: Profile
Targett made his senior team debut for Southampton in 2014 against Millwall in the League Cup second round fixture, after impressing for the youth teams.
During the second half of the 2017-18 season, he was shipped out on loan to Fulham. Targett impressed for the Cottagers, and helped them return to the Premier League.
The 23-year old managed 16 appearances for Southampton last season, scoring one goal in the process. He has made a total of 63 appearances for Southampton, and has also represented the English Under-21 side.
Signing Targett is a good move by Aston Villa
Neil Taylor was the preferred choice for the left-back position last season, and Targett’s arrival would add more competition. The 23-year old has played in the Premier League before, and that could come in handy as well.
Targett’s strengths are his crossing ability and passing, and that will be vital on the transitional play. The 23-year old is pretty tenacious as well, and isn’t the kind of full-back who will forget his defensive responsibilities.
The Englishman’s prime years are ahead of him, and if he is given a good run in the team, he could turn out to be a key player as he has a lot to offer. Targett is also a pretty versatile player, and can play as a winger if needed.
A fee of £14 million might seem a bit high for Targett as he isn’t really a household name in the top flight. However, he has never had a flashy style of play, and would be a good acquisition for Villa.
