Manchester United are keen to secure the services of Edinson Cavani, it has been reported.
According to Manchester Evening News, the PSG forward is keen to leave the club at the end of the season and is willing to join the Premier League in the summer.
This has put Manchester United on red alert as they aim to bulk up their attacking options next season.
Edinson Cavani: Not the most ideal option for Manchester United
Manchester United are poised to undergo a major squad overhaul in the summer, especially in the attacking department, which has lacked substance this season.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku has struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis while last year’s star recruit Alexis Sanchez is still yet to make a first-team impression under Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer.
Therefore, Cavani is a viable target for Manchester United amid reports linking Lukaku to a move away from Old Trafford in the summer.
The former Napoli superstar is regarded as one of the most lethal attackers in Europe, hardened by years of experience in French as well as Italian football. He also has a healthy record in international football, having netted 46 goals in 109 matches, making him the second highest goal scorer for the Uruguayan national team.
Additionally, he is proficient when it comes to winning aerial duels, potentially making him a tailor-made fit for the Premier League.
However, what makes Cavani such an appealing target for Manchester United is his aggression and physical prowess that often makes him a scourge for the opposing defenders.
This aggressive mentality coupled with his vast experience in the highest level of football could, therefore, help Cavani cope with the souring expectation that can be associated with any Manchester United signing.
On the flip side, however, Cavani will turn 33 during the course of next season, which raises doubts as to whether or not he will be able to cope with the high physical demands of the Premier League.
It also means that the Uruguayan won’t be a long-term option for the Red Devils and this could be a problem given the way the club has managed to revolve itself around young players in recent years.
Therefore, it would perhaps be wiser for Manchester United to set their sights on a younger individual, who can not only make an instant impact into the starting lineup but also prove himself to be a future prospect at the club.
