Manchester United Player Ratings vs Southampton: Unstoppable Lukaku

Manchester United continued their impressive run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 3-2 win against Southampton earlier on Saturday.

The win took them back into the top four as Arsenal could only manage a draw in their game.

An Andreas Pereira striker and a Romelu Lukaku brace helped the Red Devils overcome a spirited Southampton team at Old Trafford.

Manchester United player ratings vs Southampton

David De Gea (6/10): He was not really tested in the match despite conceding two goals. With only three shots on target from Southampton, he saved one, but the other two were too good to be saved.

Ashley Young (6/10): Young was not really called upon to do much, but when push came to shove he cleared the ball well, finishing the game with four clearances.

Victor Lindelof (7/10): Lindelof controlled the aerial battles in Manchester United’s half, and continued his recent spurt of good form.

Chris Smalling (7/10): Did have to make three tackles, and performed the defensive actions well.

Luke Shaw (6/10): The left-back was good on the offensive but was particularly to blame for the first goal that Manchester United conceded.

He was caught ball watching and drifted inwards which left Yan Valery to take time and shoot the first goal of the match into the back of the Manchester United net.

Andreas Pereira (8/10): For the 81 minutes that he was on the pitch, Pereira was the crucial player. Brought the team level with a worldie. Showed good desire to get forward and complete two dribbles.

Paul Pogba (6.5/10): The midfield maestro may be in excellent form, but yet another missed penalty from the Frenchman will not go down well.

He was crucial in the midfield of Manchester United and provided creativity that the team needed, but failed to put the game beyond doubt in the last minutes as he missed the penalty that would have put them two goals ahead.

Scott McTominay (7/10): The young midfielder delivered yet again when called upon stopping balls and pushing them forward as needed. A solid performance from him as usual.

Alexis Sanchez (5/10): Sanchez failed to create his old magic yet again, and looked out of his depth, going off with an injury in the 51st minute.

Romelu Lukaku (9.5/10): The Belgian striker seems to have regained his form and was phenomenal for his side. He nearly scored in the opening minutes, denied only by some incredible goalkeeping from Angus Gunn.

However, his goal followed Pereira’s in the second half as his right-footed shot went into the corner. An almost identical goal in the 88th minute put United ahead.

Marcus Rashford (7.5/10): The young striker pulled off yet another good performance, meeting his role well. Had a few bad touches, but often got into good goalscoring areas.

Substitutes

Diogo Dalot (7/10): The Manchester United #20 was crucial to United’s win, coming on instead of Sanchez. Caused problems down the right side.

Fred (6/10): The Brazilian was largely ineffective after coming on for his team, but held the midfield together in the last 10 minutes, stepping in for Pereira.

Tahith Chong (NA): Came on for Rashford in the last minute of the game.
