Maurizio Sarri, who was appointed as the manager of Chelsea earlier in the summer, is keen to strengthen his defence in January. As per one of the latest reports by CalcioMercato, he has identified Mattia Caldara and Alessio Romagnoli as their defensive targets for the January transfer window.
The Blues were desperate for a central defender during the summer transfer window but their efforts went in vain. In particular, they were running after the signature of Juventus star Daniele Rugani but the London based outfit were not able to lure him to the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have had a bright start to their new season in the Premier League as they have won all of their first four games so far. However, they are vouching for new defenders as Gary Cahill and David Luiz are not in Sarri’s long-term plans at Chelsea.
Notably, it would not be easy for the Premier League heavyweights to sign Caldara or Romagnoli. While Caldara arrived at AC Milan in the summer transfer window, Romagnoli has recently renewed his contract with his current employers.
