According to a report by Mirror, Wolverhampton Wanderers are close to securing a deal to lure Marcos Rojo to the Molineux Stadium to further strengthen their back line.
The report states that Manchester United are keen to offload Rojo and Matteo Darmian this summer in order to fund a £60million deal to sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.
Rojo is under a contract with Manchester United until 2021 but Jose Mourinho is apparently desirous to reshuffle his arsenal. The central defence remains an area of concern for the former Chelsea boss and thus, the Argentine international might be one of the players to be struck off their books.
Wolves are prepared to shell out £25million to make Rojo sign on the dotted line after the defender’s availability alerted them.
Under the tutelage of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves earned a much-deserved promotion to the top flight after their stupendous run of form in the Championship.
Should Wolves move in for Marcos Rojo?
Now that Wolves are due to ply their trade against the elite English clubs, they are looking to get players who can help them stand their ground against the big guns. Espirito Santo has already made some shrewd signings such as Diogo Jota, Willy Boly, Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Leo Bonatini.
But it is debatable whether acquiring Rojo would be an astute move by the Portuguese manager or not. Signed from Sporting Lisbon back in the summer of 2014 by Louis van Gaal, he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations owing to his injuries and frequent lack of form. Besides, he has had a penchant for silly challenges and has certainly lacked discipline on many occasions.
He made just 9 appearances for Mourinho’s side last season in the top flight and collected 6 yellow cards, which speaks volumes of his rash behaviour on the pitch. However, he is an experienced defender and there is no denying that. Apart from being thoroughly acclimatized with the Premier League, he has featured regularly for Argentina and has 59 national caps to his name.
In recent months, everything that Espirito Santo has touched has turned into gold but getting the best out of Rojo would certainly be one of the greatest tests of his managerial career. The 28-year-old is entering the peak stage of his career and an exit from the Old Trafford might be the need of the hour to get his career back on track. Are Wolves going to take the risk to sign him? Only time will tell.
