Mesut Ozil carved his 200th appearance for Arsenal on Saturday in a spectacular manner as he found the back of the net against Newcastle United as his side registered a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park. Ozil made a considerable impact during the game and helped the Gunners in bagging all three points.
Signed by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger during his illustrious reign at the north London based outfit in the summer of 2013, Ozil has been a huge player for the club. He signed a new long-term deal with his current employers back in February and is their highest paid player at the moment.
The former German international has no dearth of admirers and lately, he has found himself being compared to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp. Although Ozil has been flattered by such comparisons, he wants to be remembered on his own terms and he thanked the fans for their immense support.
Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said: “The fans have backed me ever since I arrived five years ago. It is an honour to be compared with him (Bergkamp). Bergkamp is a living legend at Arsenal and he was an amazing football player. But I do not want to compare myself with anybody.”
