Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing of Sam McQueen from the ranks of Southampton for the rest of the season. McQueen completed his move to the Riverside Stadium on Thursday and he would be on the books of Boro until the end of the 2018-19 campaign.
The 23-year-old emerged through the youth ranks of Southampton and he made his debut for the Saints back in February 2015 in the FA Cup fifth round fixture against Sunderland. His current contract with the Premier League side is due to expire in 2021.
McQueen is a left-sided midfielder but is also capable of plying his trade as a left-back. He has made 20 appearances for his parent club so far in the top flight, and has also spent time on loan at Southend United. He made a total of 8 appearances last term and has been capped once by the England Under-21 side.
However, he wasn’t in the plans of Southampton’s manager Mark Hughes for the ongoing season and has thus been shipped out temporarily to keep his developmental process in the ascendancy. He has become the sixth signing of the summer for Tony Pulis and it would be intriguing to see how he fares for the Smoggies in the coming months.
