Southampton eyeing a move for versatile Ligue 1 defender: SWOT analysis

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Southampton are in pursuit of Ligue 1 defender Kevin Malcuit. The Lille defender was linked with a move to Napoli earlier this summer but looks set for a move to Southampton instead.

Reports reveal Saints have made a bigger offer than Napoli, which was enough to convince Lille to sell their prized asset to the Premier League outfit before next week’s transfer deadline. But, what will he add to the table for Southampton? Here’s a SWOT analysis of the Lille star!

Strengths

Kevin Malcuit predominant plays as a fullback but what makes him such an appealing target for Southampton is his versatility. The 27-year-old can play in a number of positions across the right-hand side, even as a winger, if necessary.

He is also quite good when it comes to his offensive traits, as he can not only dribble past defenders but also has the ability to provide key passes – traits that are necessary to thrive in the Premier League. Last season, the defender averaged 2.4 dribbles per game which is more or less equivalent to an ordinary winger playing in the English top flight.

But, he’s equally impressive on the defensive front, acquiring an impressive tally of 2.7 tackles and 2.6 interceptions per game last season, which are excellent numbers, especially for a right-back.

Weaknesses

Lack of discipline is Malcuit’s biggest issue. The 27-year-old is known for his impulsive attitude which won’t certainly go down well with head coach Mark Hughes. In addition, he also needs to improve on his crossing and tactical astuteness if he is to thrive in the English top flight.

Malcuit often appears clueless against the high-pressing opposition, meaning he needs to work on his overall skill and composure in order to remain resolute in defence.

Opportunities

Malcuit could find it difficult to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Southampton starting eleven due to the presence of Cedric Soares. The Portuguese international is undoubtedly the first-choice right-back for the Saints. But, the Lille star could offer significant strength in Southampton’s depth in the defensive department.

His versatility, however, could enable him to regulate his place in the starting side but even then, he is likely to remain on the bench due to Southampton’s depth in attack.

Threats

Despite his growing reputation, Malcuit has yet failed to become an ever-present figure in top-flight football. Last season, the 27-year-old managed less than 2000 minutes of league action – something that could raise doubts over his ability to remain consistent throughout the course of the season.

That being said, Malcuit is definitely a handy addition, who can operate as a utility player for Mark Hughes as he aims to usher in a new era at Southampton next season.
