Tottenham Hotspur failed to make a single signing in the transfer window this summer but have made a decent start to the league campaign. But if they lose any of their star players, they could be in serious trouble and it is a real possibility as reports suggest that Danish international Christian Eriksen is now a transfer target for French giants PSG. The Ligue 1 side could cough up to £100m for the playmaker, if they fail to land Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic, according to a story from the Express.
Eriksen And His Numbers
The 26-year old joined Spurs in 2013 and has been a regular in the first team ever since, picking up 56 goals and 69 assists in 173 games across all competitions for the side. Last season, he was one of the best playmakers in the league and was the only Spurs player to register double-figure goals and assists in the Premier League. He also averaged 2.6 key passes per game, and close to a dribble per game and was one of the most consistent players in the country.
He time and again scored some important goals for Spurs and was one of the major reasons for the club to now stand as genuine contenders for a place in the Champions League every season. In the premier European competition, Eriksen registered even better figures, averaging three key passes per game, after registering two goals and an assist. At his age, he still can improve, which is a mouthwatering prospect and losing him will be a huge dent to Spurs’ immediate future
Will Spurs Lose Him?
He has just a couple of years left on his current contract in London and he is yet to win a trophy in his stint with Spurs. Reports suggest that he is yet to pen a new deal and wants parity in wages with the club’s highest earner in Harry Kane and if PSG are ready to offer him more, there is every chance that the 26-year old could be tempted to jump ship, even this late in the transfer window.
The fact that Spurs cannot replace him, with the English window closing more than three weeks ago might make this move tougher but with the deadline day coming pretty close, an official offer from PSG has every chance to turn his head.
Big Blow For Spurs?
While Pochettino will be adamant in retaining Eriksen’s services, the amount of money PSG can throw around will certainly make him and the club nervous. Spurs are not ready to meet Eriksen’s wage demands so this is a deal that still has some life in it. And if Eriksen ends up fleeing to France, Spurs could drastically drop in quality.
Dele Alli will remain their only real playmaker, and with Heung Min-Son also unavailable due to international duty, Spurs could well hit a real bump. Lucas Moura and Dele Alli will have to turn chief creators while Harry Kane cannot afford a dip in form anytime in the season.
With no chance to replace him, Eriksen can leave a real hole in the Spurs squad this late in the window but the Dane has been a real servant of the club and might not want to leave them hanging, three games into the league season. Spurs just cannot afford to let him go but this is a story that may go deep into the transfer window.
