Manchester United tried but in the end, rivals Manchester City were just too good to be chased down. Pep Guardiola’s side will finish the campaign with a league title and a Cup but Jose Mourinho’s side could yet win the FA Cup and set up the curtain raiser with their archrivals next season. Wouldn’t that be intriguing?
Outside, Mourinho seems calm, but on the inside, he must be fuming. The summer transfer window will provide the team with the chance to strengthen their squad and iron out the issues to challenge City on a more even keel next season.
Manchester United are already preparing for the transfer window and reports reveal the club could make a move for Sevilla defender Clément Lenglet who has impressed this season. In fact, Lenglet even featured for the team against United and helped the Andulasians beat the Red Devils. Though Bayern Munich eventually ended their dream run, the team has quite a few players who could attract attention, just like Lenglet.
According to the Sun, via the Manchester evening news, Lenglet could be sold for a fee somewhere in the region of £20 million and that’s money United certainly won’t shy away from spending, will they? Though Mourinho’s side have defended fairly okay this season, no one has consistently supported Eric Bailly at the back which is why Mourinho could be forced into spending money once again despite signing Victor Lindelof for big money last summer.
Lenglet – Does he have the goods for Manchester United?
He certainly showed how to defend against them, didn’t he? At just 22, he has shown incredible maturity and stopped even the likes of Lukaku and Sanchez which has earned the attention of the bigwigs. Though he has a lot to learn, it’s pretty clear what sort of a defender he is.
Like his compatriot Aymeric Laporte who signed for Man City, Lenglet is a pretty mobile centre-back and that’s understandable considering his age. A solid passer of the ball, he has a good knack for reading the game which sometimes helps him in situations against more well-built attackers.
He has recorded more than two tackles (2.1) and more than one interception (1.1) a game in the league this season, so he is no slouch when it comes to defending.
It’s unlikely he’ll immediately form a rapport with Bailly but both of them have the experience of playing in a competitive La Liga, so that could come to their advantage.
