Manchester City are well on their way to breaking record after record in the Premier League, having lifted the title with five game weeks left in the season. Pep Guardiola certainly has one of the strongest squads in Europe but the manager is still not convinced with the options at his disposal and is looking to sign some more superstars this summer.
One name that is exciting many fans is Toby Alderweireld.
City Ready To Spend Big On Alderweireld
According to a rumour from The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to sell Alderweireld this summer and Manchester City are favourites to land him. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have previously been linked with a move for the Belgian international, who rejected a new contract at Tottenham.
He has just over a year left on his contract and will not be too expensive but is he the right man for City?
Alderweireld, One Of The Best In The League
The 29-year old, who is yet to win a trophy in England, moved to the country for the first time with Southampton on loan and was later snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur back in 2015. Ever since, he has been a regular in the first team and has already made 105 appearances for Spurs in all competitions.
His denial to pen a new deal has seen him fall down the pecking order late this season but Pochettino is ready to give him a chance in the last few games, probably as an audition for the summer and to give him game time before the World Cup.
At 29, he is an experienced defender, with attributes tailor-made for the English game. Along with Jan Vertonghen, he has been solid at the back for Spurs, establishing one of the best defensive partnerships in the country. He can walk into every top team in England and will be a huge coup for Manchester City.
Where Does He Fit In?
Guardiola has now spent on Aymeric Laporte and John Stones since moving to Etihad but is yet to stick with either, as neither has shown enough promise to cement a first-team spot. Nicolas Otamendi has been impressive this season and might be the first choice next season as well but Vincent Kompany, his age and injury history is certain to send Pep into the market in search of another defender and Alderweireld is as good an option as any.
His previous experience in the league will allow him to walk into the first team and he can be the replacement for Kompany for the long term. He will not be expensive and can solve an impending problem at the cub and with a first-team spot waiting, there is no reason for the Belgian to reject this offer.
But do you think he is the right man for the system at Etihad?
