Liverpool have had one hell of a week so far. After strengthening their group on the top four spots with a come from behind win over Crystal Palace, Jurgen Klopp’s men smashed three past Pep Guardiola Manchester City by three goals and are in a very good position to make it to the last four of the Champions League.
All the signs are there that Liverpool will finish the season strong and that could set them up nicely for the summer transfer window which will play a key role in Liverpool’s future ambitions. Most of Klopp’s signings have done well so far and that is a testament to the backroom staff who are working behind the scenes.
Liverpool will have a new player in Naby Keita next summer and if recent reports are to be believed, they could go after Barcelona custodian Jasper Cillessen. The Dutchman has had limited game time at the club and has predominantly featured in the Copa Del Rey.
Cillessen – A good keeper rotting on the bench
While playing for Barcelona is in itself an achievement, Cillessen won’t be happy with the game time he has managed so far. When he moved to the club, he was a consistent performer for both club and country but things have changed in the last few years.
It doesn’t seem like he’ll displace current first-choice keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen anytime soon. The German has been in stunning form this season and has arguably been the best shot-stopper in the La Liga so far this season.
At 28, Cillessen is at an age where keepers are consistent as they get better with age.
A good option for Liverpool?
Loris Karius has managed a good run of games and after a jittery start, he has been more consistent in the last few games. The German has shown he can be a good sweeper keeper at times and is better with the ball at his feet compared to Simon Mignolet who has been dropped to the bench.
Cillessen has what it takes to be the first choice but considering Karius is already used to the role, Liverpool will be signing another keeper who will most likely be on the bench. Cillessen wouldn’t want to move from one bench to another, but at Liverpool, he’ll have a better chance of making the first team.
The presence of Cillessen and Karius better than Karius and Mignolet, so the custodian would be a good addition. The club will have to get rid of Mignolet, though.
