Chelsea’s have had yet another season where their title-defence has gone terribly wrong. At Juventus, Antonio Conte always managed to defend the league title but the scenario in England is so different.
While selling their key players to rivals was bad enough, the Blues failed to sign like for like replacements in terms of the quality of players. That’ll be the club’s biggest task come summer as the squad isn’t as good as the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United.
Scoring goals has been a problem for Conte’s side as they’ve only managed 54 strikes in 32 games. To win the league, you’ll need at least 70 odd goals if you have a good defence.
Alvaro Morata was signed to replace Diego Costa but the former has had a pretty inconsistent season after an impressive start at the club. In a bid to add more depth to the attack, Chelsea have been linked with a move for West Brom striker Salomon Rondon.
Reports indicate that Chelsea will have to pay a fee of £16.5m for the Venezuelan after the Baggies’ relegation is confirmed. It’s unlikely the side will manage a great escape as they simply haven’t been able to muster any sort of positive result of late that’ll give them hope.
Rondon – Fact file
The 28-year old’s goal-return so far this season has been pretty disappointing; he has managed just six goals but you can’t really blame him considering he has had minimal service from his teammates.
Unlike Chelsea, West Brom don’t really have creative players who can keep churning out openings for the big South American, so he has understandably struggled.
His previous seasons at West Midlands haven’t been all that impressive either. His best return in the Premier League has so far been nine goals which he managed during his debut campaign.
His strengths are undoubtedly his ability to win aerial duels and hold up play, but Chelsea already have a player in Olivier Giroud who can do that better.
Should Chelsea move in for Rondon?
Not really. It’s unlikely they’ll even move in for him though they are said to be interested. Rondon is at best a mid-table club player as he is past his peak years and won’t offer anything extra to what the club already have at their disposal.
There are better strikers out there for the club to target, and even a majority of the fans will attest to the same.
