After an inspired performance against Manchester United, Tottenham will travel to Merseyside to take on Liverpool as the battle for the top four intensifies. The North Londoners won’t have fond memories of their trips to Anfield in recent years but if they can replicate Wednesday’s performance, we could see an even contest.
Mauricio Pochettino’s tactics were spot on against Manchester United and although the opening goal calmed any nerves, their performance in the second half warranted more goals. Liverpool have been shaky defensively, so if the Spurs frontline can evade the Reds’ press, then we could be in for quite a lot of goals come Sunday.
Pochettino has been handed injury boosts in the form of Serge Aurier and Harry Winks. Aurier had a brilliant outing the last time Tottenham faced Liverpool but since he is just returning, he might be on the bench. Here’s how Tottenham could line up for the clash…
Defence
Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen are expected to line up at the heart of the defence. Aurier is still a doubt in terms of match fitness, so we could see Kieran Trippier continuing in the right-back position.
Ben Davies will start on the left and will have the task of containing the in-form Mohamed Salah; no easy job. Hugo Lloris has had a good season and will be a busy keeper tomorrow in goal.
Midfield
Pochettino will have to get his midfield right against the expansive Liverpool attack. Mousa Dembele is certain to start and alongside the Belgian, we could see Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan add more physicality to the midfield when compared to Dier and could get the nod. He’ll be expected to protect the back four and stay back even during the counters as Liverpool break with quite a lot of speed.
Christian Eriksen could play as the number 10. The Dane was brilliant against Manchester United and scored within 15 seconds. However, Liverpool do press well, so Eriksen will have to be supported well by the duo of Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli.
Attack
Harry Kane will lead the line for the North Londoners. The England international has scored six goals in his last five games and will fancy his chances against a porous Liverpool defence. Dele Alli had a good outing against Manchester United but hasn’t found the back of the net for more than a month now. His linkup play with Kane and Eriksen will be crucial if Spurs are to beat Liverpool at Anfield.
