According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are looking like the favourites to land Arsenal’s want-away star, Alexis Sanchez in the ongoing January transfer window. The Red Devils are confident that they can put together an offer which will be along the lines of what Arsenal want and they are also ready to include Henrikh Mkhitaryan in any possible deal.
Sanchez’s contract, which confines him to the Emirates Stadium, expires at the end of the season and Arsene Wenger seems to be reluctant to lose him for free in the summer and is ready to cash in on him this month.
Initially, it was Manchester City who were considered the runaway favourites to sign the Chilean and it was believed the only consideration would be whether the deal gets completed in the summer or in January. But with a sudden surge in interest, Arsenal are now playing hardball and City feel the figure they have been asked to shell out is not justified in their current situation.
Manchester United’s vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, has been playing an instrumental role in bringing players to the ranks of the twenty-time Premier League champions and Jose Mourinho is reported to have promised to be modest in his demands for new players in the summer, provided the Red Devils manage to sign Sanchez this month.
Ever since his move to Wenger’s side from Barcelona in the summer of 2014, Sanchez has been in dazzling form more often than not. The 29-year-old acclimatized with the animosity of the Premier League in a commendable fashion and constantly played a pivotal role in the attacking endeavours of his current employers. He has thrived in front of goal and his never-say-die attitude has won him a lot of admirers.
He struggled during his time with Barca but after moving to England, he has appeared to be a completely different commodity. So far this season, Sanchez has made 19 appearances in the top flight and has scored 7 goals and registered 3 assists and he has many years of competitive football still left in him. He is hungry to win trophies and this might be the reason why he is reluctant to extend his stay at the North London based outfit.
Mourinho’s side are placed at the 2nd spot in the league table and are trailing the Citizens by a huge margin. In order to provide a fierce competition in the coming weeks to Pep Guardiola’s troops and try and meet their targets, a move for Sanchez seems to be an extremely important step in that direction.
