According to recent reports, Schalke’s Max Meyer is being circled by many clubs for his signature. The 21- year old’s contract is up next summer and Tottenham Hotspur are said to be in the driving seat for his signature. Spurs can snap him up for a giveaway price of 17.5 m Pounds. This was because the talented German rejected a contract extension.
After being denied a late move last summer, Pochettino will go to the Westfalenstadion club with a new bid this summer.
Meyer has been in good form of late, and he is shining in the Under-21 European Championship this summer.
Owing to his experience in playing futsal, the midfielder has great technical ability. He loves a pass and favours passing instead of having a shot himself. When asked about his good technique, Meyer replied “At the age of 10 I dabbled in Futsal for four years besides the football club. In addition to the three workouts at the club, I had one complementary Futsal session per week. Saturday noon was the time for the football game and in the afternoon the futsal game took place.”
Here are three reasons why Spurs looks like good destination:
1. Tottenham lack depth in this area
Mauricio Pochettino’s team did rather well in the league season, going unbeaten at home and made it look like a two horse race. But they didn’t manage to get through to the knockout rounds in the Champions League. That hints at a lack of depth in key areas of the pitch. Cristian Eriksen cannot be called upon throughout the season. A dip in form in mid-season is not unheard of. Meyer will offer that variety and significantly improve the bench. He can even be picked for the easier Premier League fixtures(if there are any).
Meyer can and is known for his ability to find spaces and feed the ball to his forwards.
2. Meyer has a lot to prove after a disappointing season
In a season which saw Meyer only manage 18 starts in the league, the youngster saw reduced playing time as many were above in the pecking order. He scored four goals and assisted another two in an underwhelming season.(via Whoscored)
Spurs represents a new opportunity and it might just be the place where we get to see the best of the German. Indeed, Pochettino is known to improve player performances. The manager has overseen a rise in defensive standards over the past couple of seasons.
3. Tottenham offer a solid platform
In a season which precedes the World Cup, players should be looking to get as much game time as possible. In order to do this, firstly, a team must be playing a lot of fixtures, and more importantly, should be fighting on all fronts.
Schalke will not be participating in European competitions for the first time since the 2009-10 season. With Meyer not accepting their contract, it is high time for them to sell him.
