Transfer story
Newcastle United are back in the Premier League with a bang as owner Mike Ashley is readying himself to spend big this summer. We had earlier reported that the Magpies are willing to hand £70 million for manager Rafa Benitez as summer transfer kitty. Now trusted sources have reported that the Spaniard is ready to spend a huge chunk of that amount in signing a big name from Portugal. William Carvalho – the combative midfielder from Sporting Lisbon has emerged as a surprise target for Newcastle with the rumoured valuation for him being at £39 million.
If the Toons do manage to sign him, it will be a massive statement from the management. It was just two years ago when Carvalho was linked with a move to Real Madrid. He has been also linked to Manchester City as a long-term heir for Yaya Toure whereas Arsenal are interested in him since the past few years. But with interest not being concrete from any one of the top clubs at the moment, Newcastle can take this opportunity by signing him next month.
Player stats
The 25-year-old is an experienced customer and has amassed over 155 appearances for Sporting Lisbon. During his time with the club, Carvalho won the Portuguese Cup and Super Cup. With his national side, Carvalho played a major role in Portugal’s surprising win at the Euros. This season, Carvalho played 40 times for Lisbon and despite playing in a defensive role, he scored 4 goals and 3 assists. (whoscored)
What he’ll offer to the club?
Carvalho is a defensive midfielder of the highest order and at just 25 years of age, he has just entered the peak time of his career and can offer his best years to Newcastle United. Against big teams next season, Carvalho can be of immense use with his destructive abilities bringing him recognition in recent seasons. One thing is certain that Newcastle are targeting the right man who is a world class player at his position and can prove to be an inspired buy.
Worth the money?
At £39 million, it is the right assessment of one of the most consistent players in his position but Sporting Lisbon are in a fix right now which means that they need funds to do business in the summer. They might have to lessen their valuation which will benefit the Magpies in the long run. Newcastle can also achieve greater profits on him after a few years if Carvalho decides to change loyalties after a few seasons.
