Manchester United are actively trying to sign AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez, as Ruben Amorim plots more changes to his squad.
AC Milan are willing to accept offers for the Frenchman in the next transfer window, though, they could also allow him to leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2026 if there aren’t any suitors. The club bosses have not been happy with the defender’s recent performances while his relationship with the fans is not as strong as it once was, prompting them to cash him in before the 2025/26 season commences.
The 27-year-old’s potential availability has put the Red Devils on red alert. According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United have contacted AC Milan to find out the terms of signing Theo Hernandez in the summer. They have been keeping track of the full-back’s situation at the San Siro Stadium and are expected to strike.
Man United managed to make a few changes to their squad amid a difficult January transfer window. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Tyrell Malacia were farmed out on loans whilst highly-rated left-back Patrick Dorgu arrived at the club along with Arsenal defender Ayden Heaven.
Theo Hernandez to Manchester United—Right option for Ruben Amorim?
Despite signing Patrick Dorgu in January from Lecce, Ruben Amorim is still believed to be keen on signing another wing-back, capable of slotting into his preferred 3-4-2-1 system.
Malacia has been loaned out to PSV Eindhoven, while Luke Shaw’s injury problems seem no stopping. The England international has barely played for the club over the last two seasons and there have been rumours that he could have his contract terminated, such must be the frustration felt by everyone regarding his continued problems.
Given the injury record of Shaw, this season very well appears to be his last in a United shirt. And Amorim has already lined up his potential replacement in Theo Hernandez. One of the best attacking left-backs in the continent, Hernandez has scored 33 goals and supplied 44 assists in 247 appearances for Milan so far in his career. He has been a consistent performer for the Rossoneri over the years, helping them win the title in 2021/22.
However, the France international is into the final 16 months of his contract, and with progress in talks over new terms, the Serie A giants are willing to listen to offers for him in the summer. And Man United want to sign Hernandez, who with his rampaging runs, energy, technical ability, physicality and leadership skills would enhance Amorim’s squad. The ex-Real Madrid man’s durability and reliability would make him an immediate upgrade on Shaw.
Hugely experienced and at the peak of his powers, Hernandez would be a good mentor for the young Dorgu as well. He could rotate with Dorgu and ensure the Denmark international isn’t burdened with enormous responsibility too early on in his career.
All in all, the Milan star would be a fantastic option to bolster the wing-back department and the Red Devils must do everything within their powers to bag his signature.
