On-loan Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is reportedly on the brink of a sensational summer move to Barcelona.
In August 2023, it was confirmed that Mason Greenwood and Manchester United have mutually agreed that the 22-year-old would continue his career away from Old Trafford. On transfer deadline day, the Premier League confirmed that the player had agreed a loan move to Spanish La Liga side Getafe for the 23/24 season. The English forward’s impressive performances in Getafe colours after being out of action for more than a season has attracted the attention of big football clubs.
According to The Sun, Mason Greenwood is closing in on a dream move to Barcelona. The Catalan giants have been monitoring the on-loan Man United star all season and they now hope to wrap up a deal soon to make a player in June.
Greenwood, 22, has been starring for Getafe currently, and he has already bagged three goals and four assists in 16 La Liga games. Valencia and Real Sociedad are both monitoring the one-cap England international but Barcelona have now moved into the driver’s seat for his signature, the report adds.
Mason Greenwood to Barcelona—Good option?
Barcelona have endured a poor campaign so far. They came into the 2023/24 season as Spanish champions and were expected to push for retaining the title. However, that hasn’t been the case with manager Xavi Hernandez flattering to deceive.
Already out of the Supercopa de Espana and eight points behind league leaders Girona in La Liga, the club’s season hinges on qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Copa del Rey. It’s fair to say that several Xavi’s signings at Barcelona haven’t been up to the task of representing the club in the best way on the pitch, with winger, Raphinha, particularly struggling.
If Barcelona do want to get back to winning major honours in Europe again, then the calibre of players they buy has to be up to the task. The Blaugrana have not been at their free-flowing best this season, with Robert Lewandowski short of confidence and the likes of Joao Felix and Raphinha blowing hot and cold. Despite the winter arrival of Vitor Roque from Athletico-PR, a striker appears to be on the club’s summer agenda.
Barcelona are one of many big European clubs considering a move for Mason Greenwood. The English forward has performed strongly for Getafe this season which is set to spark a bidding war among some of the biggest clubs. The 22-year-old could be viewed as a long-term replacement for the ageing Lewandowski, whilst being ideal to compete with Vitor Roque up front. Due to his ability to play out wide on the right, he could be an important upgrade on Raphinha as well.
Regardless of the club underperforming this term, Barcelona’s hierarchy are supporting Xavi in the transfer market as they feel he is the right man to take the club back to challenging for the Champions League trophy and build something special. And if the Spanish tactician wants Greenwood in the summer, Barcelona must do everything possible to get him the man.
