Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams but face competition from a few of their Premier League rivals for his signature.
Chelsea are the latest entrant in the race to sign the United States international, while Brighton are understood to have already made an offer to the player. The defensive midfielder has also been linked with moves to West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Everton as he eyes an immediate return to the Premier League.
According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa want to fend off competition for Tyler Adams by activating his £25m release clause.
Adams, 24, has been working on his fitness since undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury he suffered in March. He was among a few bright spots for Leeds United in an otherwise dismal campaign that ended in relegation. The defensive midfielder played 24 times in his debut Premier League season but couldn’t save the Whites from dropping down to the Championship.
Despite Adams yet to attain full fitness from a hamstring injury, there has been no shortage of Premier League suitors with Aston Villa keen to lure him away from Elland Road by triggering his paltry £25m release clause, the report adds.
Tyler Adams to Aston Villa—Good move?
Aston Villa are doing their best to string together a formidable squad ahead of their return to European football. In Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby, they have already made some exciting signings and remain hungry for more before the transfer window closes down.
Now, Villa have expressed an interest in Tyler Adams as Unai Emery looks to bolster his midfield unit further after signing Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City. Douglas Luiz is a potential target for Tottenham, while newly promoted Burnley have enquired about 20-year-old midfielder Aaron Ramsey, so perhaps to keep the depth of Villa’s midfield unit intact, Emery wants Adams to join his forces.
Adams is highly rated across Europe and would definitely add value to Villa next season. Energetic, tenacious tackler and a solid passer of the ball, the USA captain could form a strong partnership with Boubacar Kamara at the heart of Villa’s midfield. The duo’s potential partnership should provide the license for John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey to be more adventurous and influential in the final third.
When Adams suffered a hamstring injury in March, Leeds massively suffered and it was definitely among the big reasons for them getting relegated. That just tells how influential Adams was for an average Leeds team. So, if Villa can beat their Premier League rivals for his signature, they will get a fantastic player on their hands.
Unai Emery is great at getting the best out of players, and he would undoubtedly help Adams unlock his true potential at Villa Park.
