Liverpool have completed the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for an initial fee of around £35m. The Argentina international, who was one of the stars of the 2022 World Cup, has made the made to Anfield after four seasons with Brighton.
Alexis Mac Allister, 24, helped Brighton secure Europe League qualification for the first time in a spectacular 2022-23 campaign, scoring 10 goals and registering two assists in 35 Premier League appearances. Overall, the central midfielder netted 20 goals in more than 100 appearances for the Seagulls in all formats.
Mac Allister’s arrival is likely to kickstart what looks set to be a busy summer at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp looking to freshen up his squad after an underwhelming campaign that saw them miss out on a place in the Champions League.
With the Argentinean international becoming Liverpool’s first signing of the summer transfer window, let us take a look at what will he add to the team.
Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool—What will he add to the team?
Liverpool have made it blatantly clear that they are aiming to revamp their midfield unit in the summer transfer window, with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving the club after their contracts expired, while Arthur Melo returning to Juventus at the end of his loan spell.
The confirmation of Alexis Mac Allister as the first signing of the window should excite Liverpool fans a lot. Mac Allister had a season to remember; he enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 campaign with Brighton, as well as was part of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina side that lifted the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 24-year-old perfectly fits the profile of what Liverpool need in the middle of the park moving forward. In Mac Allister, the Reds have signed a player with great passing ability, game awareness, energy and tenacity.
The World Cup winner is a creative and agile footballer who can drive his team forward and dictate the tempo of a game, whilst also being effective in counter-attacks and transitions. That will hold him in good stead under Jurgen Klopp, who wants his team to press high and supply the ball quickly from midfield to the forwards. He also possesses great vision and can unlock rigid defences with pin-point through balls and crosses.
A box-to-box midfielder by trade, Mac Allister can also play as a No.6 or No.10 and such versatility would make him an asset for the Reds. Not to forget, he works hard off the ball and is adept at winning back possession for his team.
The Argentinean international joins a quality midfield unit at Anfield, with Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho representing an established spine of the Liverpool team. The ex-Brighton star will push the existing crop of midfielders to improve their performances further, whilst adding much-needed depth to Klopp’s squad.
Mac Allister has proven himself in the Premier League at Brighton, and Liverpool snapping him up at an initial fee of £35m is no less than a masterstroke.
