Newcastle United will return for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos in the summer, as per Marca. Having been extremely close to signing the Brazilian centre-back for €50 million in January, the Magpies have not given up on their target.
Carlos was on the verge of joining Newcastle in January and was said to be pushing for a move but Sevilla did not let it happen in order to maintain their ambitious charge for their first La Liga title since 1946. Sevilla are currently four points adrift of Real Madrid, who are sitting at the top of the table.
Newcastle United, on the other hand, utilized the winter window to good effect with their newfound financial freedom. They are now four points clear of the relegation zone, having spent most of the season in it. The Toon Army will now look to strengthen their defence further, next summer, though the probability of them signing Diego Carlos largely depends on their Premier League status.
As per the report, Sevilla are looking set to lose both, Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos next summer. Chelsea and Newcastle United seem to be the potential suitors for the defensive duo.
Is Diego Carlos the answer to Newcastle’s defensive woes?
Diego Carlos is physically imposing and is adept at his role. The Brazilian defender is one of the main reasons why Sevilla are doing well this season.
He can defend inside the box but also deal expertly with the space behind him. In other words, he is a fit for a varying range of tactics. He is a left-footed centre-back who is agile and knows how to take advantage of his physical features. Moreover, Diego Carlos is difficult to beat when it comes to 1v1s. The Magpies and Eddie Howe wanted him this past winter and it is fair to assume that they will want him ahead of the next season.
Carlos should not have much difficulty adapting to the pace and quality of the Premier League. The 28-year-old is decent with the ball at his feet and is calm under pressure. Even when he cannot get the ball, Carlos has the tendency to off-put his opponent’s rhythm and thus, reduces the chances of the attacker making an impact in the final third.
Sevilla will find it difficult to keep hold of their man. Newcastle will be hoping to lure Carlos out of Spain, only two seasons into his La Liga stint.
Given his attributes and the inability of the Magpies to keep clean sheets and offer consistency in terms of being a solid outfit, the potential addition of someone like Diego Carlos should certainly be an enticing prosepect for the Toon Army.
