Best Manchester United XI so far this season: Daniel James the standout star

Manchester United have had a troubling start to the 2019-20 season, one which could cause them to fall way down the pecking order in the Premier League table, and strip them of all the aura that their illustrious history has built.

The Red Devils are languishing in the 12th place in the Premier League and are just two points away from the relegation zone, after 8 games this season. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s approval ratings are looking perilous, and a few more poor results could end in the sacking of yet another Manchester United manager.

Only a few players have impressed for the club this season, with a majority of the players being woeful thus far.

Let’s take a look at Manchester United’s best XI so far:

Goalkeeper

David de Gea has had a difficult last two seasons, as his form has waned and he looks a shadow of the superb form that he showed a few years ago at Old Trafford. The Spaniard has played all 8 Premier League games this season and has looked good in bits, but his goalkeeping has been suspect a few times as well.

With his future clear now after signing a new deal at the club, United fans will expect his form to pick up.

Defence

Manchester United’s big summer signing, Harry Maguire, has also not looked his commanding self in a Manchester United jersey. But the Englishman has helped United concede fewer goals, with the Red Devils letting in 8 goals in 8 matches this season. He makes it to United’s best XI alongside Victor Lindelof, who was the club’s best defender last year.

Another one of Manchester United’s summer signings, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, has been in superb form this season, showing great potential, and takes up the right-back slot.

At left-back, it’s a toss-up between Luke Shaw and captain Ashley Young, both of whom have had average seasons. Shaw gets into this XI purely on the basis of being a little quicker when getting back to defend.

Midfield

United have had all sorts of problems in midfield, due to the injuries to Paul Pogba, and the club’s decision to not sign a replacement for Ander Herrera. Pogba has started 5 of the 8 games for the club in the Premier League, racking up 2 assists. He will start alongside Scott McTominay in midfield in this best XI, with the United youngster showing some promise.

The No. 10 role in Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 system has been a huge problem for the United manager as both Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata have been woeful in that role. We are going to choose Mata here as he could still make a difference with fast runners ahead of him.

Attack

Anthony Martial started the season well, with 2 goals and 1 assist from 3 games for the club, but an injury has kept him out, which has resulted in the English club being poor in front of goal. He will start as the main striker, while Marcus Rashford – who has come under severe criticism for his lack of goals – will start on the left.

New signing Daniel James has been impressive for the club this season, scoring 3 goals in the Premier League so far; he will start on the right.
